The Goal

“Therefore, since we are surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses, let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us!” (Hebrews 12:1)

Before my singing days, I enjoyed playing high school sports. I loved playing football and baseball.

I worked so hard as a kid to try and get in shape for the upcoming season. My dad would measure a mile distance in our neighborhood and get me set up with a plan, to run and get ready for the season. He had a stopwatch and he would time every mile that I ran, challenging me to get better every day!

He would always encourage me to keep working hard and to finish the race. At times he would have to remind me of “the goal”. There were obvious times of utter exhaustion and moments when I almost quit. He would have to remind me to stay focused and to keep my eyes straight ahead, on the upcoming season.

I find that those lessons I learned as a young man still apply today, especially in my journey as a believer.

It takes discipline to keep my eyes on “the goal”(Christ). I have to be reminded that even when things go wrong and I get distracted or exhausted, that I must push through and keep my eyes on him.

God has a race measured and marked out for us. It’s his specific plan. We may not always see the finish line, we may not even think at times that we will finish. But God marked it off and measured it for us and he knows that we can make it to the end, if we keep our eyes focused on Christ!!

May you never lose sight of “the goal”.

“Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the pioneer and perfected of faith.”
(Hebrews 12:2)

If it weren’t for you guys and your songs setting the measurement of holiness so high, my life and that of my family would never be closer to God. Thanks!
